UK Pub Pool Rules (English Pool Rules)

Our English pool tables follow standard UK pub pool rules, commonly played across pubs and leagues in the UK. These rules are ideal for both casual and competitive games.

Equipment

  • 16 balls in total:

    • 7 red balls

    • 7 yellow balls

    • 1 black ball (8-ball)

    • 1 white cue ball

Object of the Game

Players or teams are assigned either reds or yellows. The aim is to pot all of your assigned balls and then legally pot the black ball to win the game.

Break Off

  • The game is started by a break from behind the baulk line..

  • If the black is potted on the break, it is respotted and the game continues.

Choosing Colours

  • Colours are not decided until a ball is legally potted.

  • If a red or yellow is potted without a foul, that colour is assigned to the player.

  • Potting both colours in one shot means the table remains open.

Legal Shots

  • You must always hit one of your own colours first.

  • Once all your colours are potted, you must clearly nominate a pocket for the black.

Fouls

Common fouls include:

  • Hitting the opponent’s colour first

  • Potting the cue ball (a “scratch”)

  • Failing to hit any ball

  • Potting the black ball before clearing your colours

After a foul:

  • The incoming player receives two shots.

  • The cue ball is played from where it lies, unless potted, in which case it is played from baulk.

The Black Ball

  • The black must be potted after all of your colours are cleared.

  • Potting the black and white, or committing a foul while potting the black, results in a loss of game.

General Pub Rules

  • No jump shots.

  • One foot must remain on the floor when taking a shot.

  • Disputes are settled by a re-rack or by house decision.

Whether you’re a seasoned league player or just enjoying a casual game with friends, our English pool tables at No Name Bar and Games in Colchester are perfect for classic UK pub pool. Book a table, drop in for pay-as-you-go pool, and enjoy one of the best places to play pool in Colchester. ?
